Watercolour on Saunders Waterford CP 300gsm paper, 54cm x 35cm unframed.
I'm fascinated by our Australian native animals and the Emu is certainly a good example! I was inspired to paint these emus after seeing mother Emu in our local area, and father on another trip a few months ago. I decided to join them and give them a family too!
Their ancestors go right back to the day of dinosaurs! Mother Emus are normally a little larger than males and they lay 8 - 10 eggs each weighing about 200g. Then Father Emu comes along and sits on them until they hatch. This takes approximately 8 weeks. During this time, he barely moves, does not eat, just sits there! As soon as they hatch, they're as active as can be! Imagine that!
